Before my son was born (and I'll just say here that he just turned 21!) I started making alphabet blocks out of plastic canvas and yarn. I saw the pattern in a book and thought they were cute. So, not knowing what I was going to do with them, I went out and bought the plastic ... I already had the needle and yarn from my mom's various crochet projects. I cut the plastic into squares and began creating the letters. About 2/3 of the way done, life kicked up a notch, and this project went to the special place where projects go to wait.
21 years later I'm organizing my sewing totes and there they are; the 3 of 9 completed blocks, a bunch of completed sides waiting to be made into blocks, non-complete sides, and a whole bag of yarn. Why not finish them now?
I am happy to say that I now have a completed set of alphabet blocks that will be awaiting my granddaughter when she comes to visit! It really does feel good to finish something that's just been sitting for so long.
Why I liked this project:
- They were very easy to do!
- It was a great way to use up leftover yarn.
- If you have leftover yarn to use, this is an inexpensive project. I only had to buy 5 big sheets (10 1/2 x 14 inch) of plastic canvas, and maybe 3 small skeins of yarn for the colors I didn't already have. I already had a plastic canvas needle.
- The colors were bright, which made this fun to work on.
- The pattern did not specify how to put the blocks together, so I thought I would take a picture and match it up with its beginning letter ... like "Flower" with "F" on the same block. Well, the pictures given did not fall well into my plan, and I was having a very serious OCD moment when I realized it just wouldn't work. If I do this over, I want to try to come up with some other pictures and either replace some, or make additional blocks. But that's just me, because really, is a little kid playing with these going to care if the airplane is not on the "A" block?
this is the pattern I lost! my daughter just announced our first grandchild is on the way, and requested a set of these blocks like she had as an infant! any chance you would copy the pattern booklet and provide it - scan and send or copy and snail mail? how much would you charge? it would mean a lot to me and to my daughter
